Getting To Know Keith Watson, Drummer Of Indie Rock Band, “The Intemperate Sons”

LLTM: Is there a special meaning or back story on how the band got its name?

Keith: Several years ago, I wrote a deeply personal song and called it “Intemperate Son”.  I was trying to find a word for angry that would make people look it up.  I never recorded it, although we still may.  Flash forward 10 years and me and my sons (Jake and Max) decide to form a band.  I could think of no better title than The Intemperate Sons.  Maybe we’re not exceptionally angry, but it just had a ring to it.

LLTM: Who have been some of your biggest musical influences and can we hear any similarities?

Keith: Van Halen, Led Zeppelin,  and Alice in Chains I would say are the biggest.  I hit hard and love to groove on the drums.  I picked that up from listening to Alex Van Halen and John Bonham.  From a songwriting perspective, my biggest influence has probably been Jerry Cantrell.  There is something about the way he puts a song together and applies the lyrics that have always inspired me.  The vocal harmonies from AIC are hugely influential.

LLTM: What has been the hardest part about being in the music industry today? What about the easiest?

Keith: The hardest part, being an up and coming band, is breaking through the algorithmic wall of the streaming services and the need to constantly create content to accompany your pitch to whomever you’re selling to.  The mystery of being in a band has long since died with the constant connection of the internet and social media.  The easiest part is connecting with the fans directly through social media.

LLTM: When you listen to music, do you connect more with the lyrics or the instrumental side?

Keith: I connect with both.  With me they are hard to separate.  Everyone has their guilty pleasure music that may be way outside of your normal consumption, but I need emotion from the music and lyrical content to verbally paint what the music is making me feel.

LLTM: Who is currently on your playlist, and what song could you never get tired of?

Keith: We are on the FRAME|WORK roster of artists and I have really connected with Julien-K, Hu3M3n, and Slaves to Humanity.  Just peering down at my work out playlist, I have Starbenders, Dead by Sunrise, Mastodon, Dio, Alice in Chains, Kadavar, Dead Groove Band, and Killing Joke.

LLTM: Who has been that person in your life you have always looked up to and why?

Keith: I’m going to tie this into the song, but it was my father.  When I was in my teens he was the one that bought me drums to get me out of a really bad point in my life.  I’m not a musician without him.  The new release is about the last few months of his life and a letter he wrote about a vivid dream months before he died. There are other elements in it too, but he was the inspiration.

LLTM: What do you hope the fans get out of your music?

Keith: As a musician, your hope is that fans will relate to your music in their own way and create their own meaning.  If it helps them workout something in their own life or just identify with something to make things easier, then we have won!

LLTM: If you had to give up something for 30 days to perform with any artist/band for 1 hour, what would you give up and who would you be performing with?

Keith: I would give up all meat and would perform with Peter Murphy!

LLTM: Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years and what will it take to get there?

Keith: For us it is simple!  We want to still have the same creative spirit and drive that we do now, which means we never stop working on new material even when we’re touring.  Our chemistry now, with the addition of Mark Marks, is perfect.  Maintaining will drive us to newer heights!

LLTM: What is the most influential quote or saying for you and why?

Keith: I’m sure it was said by someone, but I try to live by “Never let anyone tell you it can’t be done”.  People will do that because they limit themselves and can’t see a path through their own eyes.  I don’t want to live by someone else’s standards.

LLTM: Has the writing or recording process began for a new EP/Album, if so when can the fans expect it to be released?

Keith: We are about to release our full-length album “The Color Within” in June to all streaming services.  We also have vinyl records and CD’s that can be bought from our website at http://www.theintemperatesons.com.

LLTM: What does the touring schedule look like for 2022?

Keith: We are touring regionally in Texas this summer but are in the process of planning a tour out to the west coast and back later this year.
